The Wombaff Trophy Report

Times were when this competition wasn't taken very seriously, those times are gone. Inter-fleet rivalry has given the Wombaff a passion where the losing teams go away bitter, questioning the integrity of the boats, wind, courses and any other tenuous reasons for leaving empty handed.

There are those who discover a camaraderie with other members of their fleet that never previously existed and those that don't. Those that don't even recognise other fleet members and still don't. So before considering the racing we should thank the teams that took part and those that didn't (LBSA, Cruisers, Wayfarers, Oppies) maybe next year?

So to the racing, this progressed v slowly with each 100 metre race lasting nearly 10 mins! After 3 races we had the Dart 16(b) team out in front having defeated the Dart16(a) team and the favourites the International Canoe allstars (with veterans Marston, Dougal and Graham), another dazzling performance against the Mirrors gave then 3 wins and looking good for the trophy.

But we hadn't seen the Dart 18 team perform yet or the all Girl team of Debbie, her friend and a good looking red head (Rob)! Couple of races later the Dart18 team were threatening with 2 lucky wins against the Fast Cats and the Girls who remained glamorous but like the Mirrors without a win all day!

The IC's snatched a win from the 16(a) team already on a losing streak and now pretending to be more interested in other matters.

Then along came the Handicap fleet, first up were the Girls and an easy victory for Simon B, young Aiden and Stacey. Then the Dart18 fleet were beaten with ease, "Aiden v Dart16 National Champ" no contest, then the Mirrors were brushed aside.

So:
3 out of 3 for Handicap Fleet.
3 out of 4 for the Dart16(b) Team
2 out of 3 for the IC's
2 out of 3 for the Dart 18 fleet
2 out of 4 for the Fast Cats
0 out of 4 for the Mirrors
1 out of 3 for the 16(a)'s
0 out of 3 for the Girls

So it all gets serious with Dart 18 v IC's, mounting excitement sees the IC's on form battering the 18's. With light running out and the weather turning cold results were reviewed and the Handicap fleet awarded a direct entry to the final.

The only semi saw Dart 16(b) against the IC's for a place in the final. The Veterans were much too eager to start or was the committee boat drifting backwards! The result however was never in doubt as the IC's rounded the first mark clear ahead with first and second.

So to the final the Veteran IC sailors against "the team of the day" Simon B, Aiden and Richard Stacey. Could Aiden hold them back, would Stacey be able to outwit Dougal? Sadly a valiant effort came to an end when Simon B was forced to take a penalty after an incident at the first mark leaving the old 1,2 for Marston and Dougal. A great attempt failed and the IC's took the trophy ? just.

A particular thanks should go out to the Fast Cat team for providing the anchor for the committee boat on the odd occasion it was stationary. (By anchor of course we refer to the standing in lake, feet in mud head above water type). If you ever require a boat anchor I would recommend Adrian as particularly suitable if a little hefty to haul back in.

Wombaff Trophy

Saturday morning at the West Kirby marine lake there was a gathering of DSC members for the annual Wombaff event. From 11.30 onwards there was more rigging going on than an American election as 6 Pico's were prepared for the inter fleet challenge. The results are to follow so watch this space. Follow this link for the Gallery. (Allow time for downloading).... Post your own account of the day to webeditor.
