Saturday 18 Sep saw a force 4 to 5 with an active sea. McAttack (Dart 18) took 1st place in race 1 and 2. Animal was wild but held on to 2nd for race 1, she ran amok in the 2nd race stampeding into a spectacular pitch pole on a downwind leg, snapping the con bar and limped in on one rudder to retired with damage. The juniors on the Dart 16's fought bravely, one team retired early and the crew & helm of Animal abandoned the beast on the beach and commandeered a Dart 16 to continue their campaign on a smaller vessel. Faith (Dart 16) helmed stoically by Paul Oliver secured a 3rd and a 2nd they were unable to continue their trend and scored DNF for the third. The conditions for the day had remained challenging with only one boat finishing the final race. Thanks to Simon and Rob for providing OD cover at short notice. Sunday saw a carbon copy of the strong winds and grey skies. 11 Dart 18's took to the water, 3 Dart 16's a Hobie and a Spitfire. It can be argued, and often is, that regardless of handicap some boats fare better in stronger winds. I would say that where light winds demand concentration skill and strategy, the strong winds require stamina, courage, skill and determination. Simon M and Mike D showed their mettle and took the first race of the day. James D stamping his authority on the proceedings for the following 2 races with a 1st in each. For others the conditions proved too challenging and several boats retired. The rescue crews were kept busy with many capsizes to attend to and Andrew H ably managed the proceedings so thanks go to our support team. Our Commodore continued consistent form with 3rd place in race 5 and 6 to head the leader board. Thanks to our Lady Commodore for the food. It is of note that the leader of the most powerful nation in the world has been accused of taking the 'soft option'. During his national service he managed to avoid front line conflict in a war zone by serving with what the British would call 'The Home Guard'. Meanwhile back in blighty, in a small and well-loved sailing club Mr Ian ('significantly tougher than Mr Bush') McLean (Commodore DSC) faced tough conditions, he refused to yield to rolling waves and gusty winds. He spurned the comfort of office and forged headlong to victory aboard his trusty Dart 18 with Debbie remaining demure and unruffled throughout. Mark Emptage 20 Sep View Gallery. Images may take time to download. 15 Sep This weekend is the DSC Catamaran Open event with three races on Saturday 18 September starting at 12:40. Three races will also be run on Sunday 19 September starting at 13:20, to include a long distance race (conditions permitting) and exclusively for the catamaran fleet. The event prize will be the Dee Estuary Long Distance trophy currently held by James Douglas. Rumour has it that James will not be able to race on the Saturday and with only one discard for the entire event the opportunity exists for any team to win it for their own trophy cabinet. The event will be run using the DSC handicap scoring system with average laps calculated if required. This means that any cat can compete on a level playing field with the best performance overall winning the prize. There is Kudos at stake with the Autumn series starting 26 September and some scores to settle following the hotly contested Champagne series, nail your courage to the mast and strap your crew to a leeward hull, come and join in the fun. Entry is free and rescue cover will be provided on both days. Rolls and butties will be available apres sail, and an informal get together is being planned by Matt for the Saturday night. Contact your Fleet Captain for details. Not sailing this weekend? Come and help the support team, brush up on your race officer skills or just give moral support. 07 Sep The fleet flags used every week in our club racing also have an internationally
recognised meaning. Draw your own conclusions, just for fun. Flag........DSC..Code Letter........International meaning
