Wirral & Mersey Regatta 2005

LYC Catamaran Classes at DSC.

The wind a feisty 20 +knots with gusts pushing F6 and the sea state choppy. 6 Dart 18's took to the water in the challenging conditions under tempestuous skies. The sunlight occasionally broke though in bright bursts of golden light to be shuttered off abruptly by the rolling clouds. Permanent Waves took an early and impressive lead in the first lap exploiting the stability inherent in the robust crew and burly helm. Driving their Dart 18 through the surf around the windward mark and blasting downwind. The procession followed on through the leeward section and Jammie Dodger sailed close and high in a daring attempt to steal the lead at the second rounding of the windward mark. Jammie Dodgers skill was unfortunately overpowered by a gust during the tack and they took a capsize. Permanent Waves drove on to a win, Event Horizon took second from Hilbres Couture in third. The conditions were too stiff for some and 2 boats retired.

Race 2 and Permanent Waves broke a bridle wire shackle and did not finish. Event Horizon raced hard to take first and Hilbres Couture took second. Event Horizon took first overall in the Regatta with a solid performance (perhaps benefiting in endurance to some extent from the DSC 'Fit for Sailing' program).

The rescue team was kept on their toes with several capsizes to attend to and the Race Officer was ably assisted to run the two races in tough conditions. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the early retirees who either chose the sensible option or had it thrust upon them.
