14 Sep DSC visits Durban Team. Report

Update

The winner of the DSC junior writing competition is Cameron Douglas, he will receive a place for himself and a parent to be on the flotilla for the start of the big race. Congratulations to Cameron. A pair of places were awarded to Damian Emptage for a fiece performance with the pugel stick during the clubs summer medieval banquet. He defeated all comers depite his young age of 14. There are still 3 pairs of invitations for club members to be part of the Flotilla to cheer Durban Clipper over the start line on Sunday 18 Sep. Each pair will be taken as guest passengers by LYC members on cruising yachts from Liverpool Marina. Contact your Rear Com Social asap.

An opportunity for DSC members to view Durban Clipper in Albert Dock will be arranged for an early evening next week. A chance to view any of the racing yachts can be arranged by contacting Rear Com Social.

Update from Durbans' Frank Brown.

With only 10 days to go before we set sail, events are happening at full pace, though not all in the planned order! ? Durban ' should by now have been securely ?tucked up' with the rest of the fleet in Liverpool with the crew attending to last minute tuning and victualling . Unfortunately that's not quite the case, with the boat currently in Holyhead and hopefully as I write is out of the water being anti-fouled and having the hull and instruments checked one last time. With the crew billeted in local Youth Hostels and B&B's, there is an understandable desire to get back to business.

Current thinking is that we will be back on the water on Thursday of this week, and will make the trip to Liverpool on Friday. Once there the last week will be hectic, and an exciting but nerve racking time is promised in the lead-up to the Sunday 18 th start. The complete 1 st leg crew will be on-board by Wednesday of this week and will be looking forward to the assignment of watches and duties.

Thanks once again for the support of Dee Sailing Club, and our apologies for our delay in getting to Liverpool . Once we know final dates with certainty, we'll be happy to host your visit, and make some new friends

Best regards

Update

Durban Skipper Craig Millar sent the following email.

Dear sir

I came across this article in the DSC News on the internet, regarding "Durban Clipper". I am the skipper of Durban for this next Clipper round the world yacht race and would be pleased to know more about our supporters at DSC. Perhaps someone could contact me and fill me in.

Kind Regards Craig Millar Skipper Durban Clipper

I sent the following reply.

Craig

Thank you for your email. I am happy to have volunteered to liaise with the 'Durban Clipper' for the Dee Sailing Club. I would like to publish a Team Profile (with pictures if possible) on the club web site and outline the ways in which we can be of most support to Durban and your team during the build up and during the race.

We are a family sailing club and at present have a strong Catamaran fleet with LBSA cruising yachts and a range of mono hulls. We have an active youth section with oppies' mirrors and Dart 16's. We could arrange a 'Meet the team' evening or take some Durban team members for a spin on the estuary with club members. Wednesday evening is 'Club night' where we meet to play snooker or catch up on news and maybe have a drink. Saturdays are predominantly juniors sailing at West Kirby marine lake and Sundays are Club racing on the estuary. If you have any suggestions in ways we may best support 'Our Team' please contact me on 0151 670 0320.

We have secured 10 places courtesy of the Liverpool Yacht Club to be on the flotilla for the start of the race in September. Two of those places have already been allocated as a prize during a medieval banquet held earlier this month. I would like to arrange a visit to see the clipper in dock for our juniors and other members during the open week prior to the race start.

The are still 8 places to allocate for the opportunity to be on the water for the start of the race. Six of these will go in pairs to the highest bids received before Thu 1 Sep 05, the proceeds will go to the Boat Shed project. The remaining 2 places will be allocated to the junior member who posts the best sailing story (in the opinion of the webeditor) on the club web site before that date.

I would like to collect a list of members who would like to visit the Clippers in Liverpool on a date in the week prior to the race. Contact webeditor or speak to your Rear Commodore (social).

Round the World Clipper Race
2005 - 2006

The Round the World Clipper Race will involve ten 68ft yachts and dozens of sailors from around the globe. The event is promoted by www.clipper-ventures.co.uk and supported by Liverpool Yacht Club www.lyc.org.uk The Kindred clubs have been invited to adopt a boat and follow their progress throughout the event. The race will start from Liverpool on 18 Sep 05. There will be a huge flotilla of boats to send off the competitors for the first leg.

DSC had adopted the boat 'Durban' skippered by Craig Millar (42) from KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. All the boats will arrive in Liverpool by the 3 September. A visit to view the boats and meet some of our team will be arranged during the two weeks before the start. We can follow their progress during the race on the internet and maintain contact with our crew via emails to the boat to offer support, encouragement, advice and above all friendly contact with the outside world.

We have 10 places reserved for DSC members to be part of the Flotilla to support our adopted team over the start on Sun 18 Sep. Keep a lookout on the club notice board and the club web site for any developments.
