Sailing Questions

How well do you know your sailing? More to the point, how well would you have fared in the Sailing Knowledge round of last week's 'Pub Quiz'? Test yourselves with these fiendish questions, dreamt up by Quiz Master Emptage. Then impress him with your spontaneous answers next time he tries to catch you out!

1. The right side of a boat is known as Starboard and the left side is now known as Port. In 1804 what would the Port side of a boat be known as?
2. What does the acronym G.P.S. stand for?
3. The leading edge of a sail is known as the luff and the trailing edge known as the leech what is the area in the middle of the sail known as?
4. What is the scale for wind strength called?
5. If the Shipping Forecast says that Gales are 'imminent' within how many hours would you expect the forecasted weather to reach the described area?
6. In the context of types of anchor what does C.Q.R. stand for?
7. What colour light is displayed on the Starboard side of a ship travelling at night?
8. The black and white chequered flag is famous for signalling the end of a motorcar race. In the International Code Flags used in sailing what letter of the alphabet does a blue and white chequered flag denote?
9. What is the manoeuvre called when a boat sailing a broad reach on a Port tack turns onto a broad reach on a Starboard tack.
10. A boat is sailing a steady course on 275 degrees. If the vessel turns about and sails a reciprocal course what would their new bearing be?

We really must find him more work to do around the house...
