Dart 18 at Bala Cat Club 30 Apr-1 May 2005

Bala Cat Club played host once again to the Dart 18 fleet following an absence of around 15 years. Dee SC turned up on mass with the majority of travellers, bringing the total to 25, 5 more than the Cat Handicap fleet also sharing the venue!

Saturday started with light winds and the sunshine finally breaking through around midday. Alan and Fiona Kernick (Red Insurance) set the precedence for the weekend by winning all three of that day's races, with Jamie&Jamie, Geoff/Jenny Lloyd, Pete Wilson and Mel Rogers/Lee Davies battling over the other places. The third race saw the otherwise steady wind drop off, resulting in the whole fleet (except the Kernicks) scoring DNF when timed out after 30 mins. The day finished with the Kernicks leading over night with Mel Rogers/Lee Davies and Geoff/Jenny Lloyd joint second.

The legendary Bala hospitality was very much present during the Saturday night BBQ/social as the sun set on possibly the most picturesque venue in the country.

The following morning saw a stiffening SW breeze building up to F4 and above. With wind once again straight down the lake, the courses, despite using many of the fixed buoys were the ideal Dart 18 windward/leeward with the occasional reach across to the other side of the lake. Race 4 saw Mel Rogers/Lee Davies chasing Paul/Michelle Roberts up the first beat, until their mast came down (always, always, always tape up your shroud split pins!!). The Kernicks then fought through to take first and keep their convincing lead.

‘Gear failure' saw the Kernicks miss races 5 & 6, which were won by Jamie&Jamie, bringing them back in contention if they won the final race and finished 10 places ahead of the Kernicks. It was not to be though; the Kernicks came in third, sensibly going for a safe result rather than pushing for another first. This left Jamie&Jamie second and Pete Wilson third following good results on Sunday.

Overall, this was a very welcome return to a most friendly club. The Race Officer, Don Findlay , gave some great racing, while keeping all sailors informed of proceedings. To achieve 7 races over a weekend, including lunch breaks and briefings in between races and still getting everyone away by 1700 on the Sunday was quite a feat.

Results:

1. Alan and Fiona Kernick (Red Insurance)
2. Jamie Lynch and Jamie Ferguson
3. Pete Wilson (and son)
