26 May

Datchet Water Dart 18 GP 3

Dee again had a fairly strong presence for the 3 rd Dart 18 Event of this season held at Datchet Water Sailing Club on the 14/15 May, with only Stokes Bay and the host club boasting more boats.

Making the journey down from ?God's own acre?, as Gareth would put it was Paul & Michelle Roberts with Chris Aspinall & Andrew Mathewson. Also in attendance were Geoff & Jenny Lloyd who regularly fly the Dee flag at these events.

Racing started at a very sociable 13:00 and a fresh F4?5 greeted the 34 competitors.

Race 1 began with a clear start and saw Alan & Fiona Kernick recording their first win with Dan Norman & Cathrin Farthing following in 2 nd and Lawrie & Ellie Draper taking 3 rd from Paul Waklin & Jo Coe in 4 th .

Race 2 mirrored the first with the top three of the Kernicks, Norman / Farthing and the Draper's but Peter & Mark Wilson this time claimed the fourth spot.

Race 3 saw the Drapers round the windward mark in 1 st but they were overhauled by Norman / Farthing who took line honours from the Drapers in 2 nd. Paul and Michelle Roberts also made a good start reaching the windward mark in 5 th , and managed to overtake Marco Manganelli & Catherine Howland and Jamie Lynch & Jamie Ferguson to take 3 rd from Lynch & Ferguson who had to settle for 4th

Race 4 saw the Departing UKIDA Chairman Simon Farthing & Cecilia Dent round the windward mark in first by quite a distance, having chosen the right side of the course. His favoured side however let him down on the downwind leg and he lost greatly on the boats behind him.

It was the incoming UKIDA Chairman Lawrie Draper & Daughter Ellie however who claimed Race 4 from Bob & Luke Fletcher in 2 nd with Marco Manganelli & Catherine Howland taking 3 rd from Paul Waklin & Jo Coe in 4 th .

Must be said that conditions were difficult to read, as wind over the race area was very patchy and constantly shifty.

Again on Day 2 the race area was very patchy but this time with far less wind and although crews sailed out to the race area the general consensus was that we should not sail.

After not too long a wait the Race Officer postponed and sent us ashore and a short while later abandoned the three remaining races, a decision that was welcomed by all.

So with four races sailed and taking into account one discard the final results were Dan Norman & Cathrin Farthing in 1 st , Lawrie & Ellie Draper 2 nd and Alan & Fiona Kernick 3 rd all within a point of each other and Bob & Luke Fletcher taking 4 th .

Dee's Paul & Michelle Roberts finished 8 th , Geoff & Jenny Lloyd in 11 th with Chris Aspinall & Andrew Mathewson who finished 20 th one in front of Ian Barrington & Steve Roberts who stole the show winning another Handicap trophy however this time for 3 rd place on handicap overall.
