The Corus IC Open Meeting

I know its hard to believe but yes its true, I won the Corus International Canoe Open Meeting. The weekend of the 13 th and 14 th of May, fourteen Asymmetric IC`s and three Standard IC`s met at Corus Sailing Club, Port Talbot, South Wales. The Saturday was windy, a good Force 4/5 but the reservoir was flat as a pancake. All seventeen Canoes nervously launched and headed for the start line where three back to back races was ready to start, amazingly I felt comfortable with the wind strength and tacking and gybing on the flat water didn't present any problems, I guess sailing on the Dee estuary, battling against tide and swells has put me in good stead, thank you to our Rib drivers for two years of watching me swim. Race one got underway, the AC`s and IC`s started together on the same course I rounded the windward mark near the back of the mixed fleet, the other two IC`s were not to be seen anywhere, multi capsizes from my IC competitors lead them to retire early due to wind strength and bruised ribs, leaving me as the only IC sailor left in the race (There had to be a logical explanation to my roaring success in only my third Open meeting) The rest of the weekend was a formality as the final result was a guaranteed 1 st place for yours truly. The AC winner was the unstoppable Robin Wood, the current world Champion.

The strong constant wind provided some screaming sailing and it was great to be amongst the top AC sailors in the country. I would just like to add, when I was presented with the 46 year old silver cup, it was noted that the dominating name of past winners was our own Tony Marston who was un-catchable during the 1970`s. Corus Sailing Club organized a great Open meeting and our fellow competitors created excellent entertainment, on and off the water. Cheers to all.
