Round Hilbre Races - a view from the Wayfarers

Doug Reeson was prompted to email the webeditor to explain why he has not entered the Round Hilbre races - basically time is tight for the monohulls. I have, with Doug's permission, published his email here in order to prompt debate. Please follow up on the Bulletin Board if you have a view. The scoring software allows us to combine different starts into a single set of results, so I can't see why the monohulls should not start their trip to Hilbre as the first Race.

Doug's email:

The report of the second ?Round Hilbre ? Series invited comments, so here goes from the point of view of sailing a Wayfarer monohull.

On both occasions I have sailed the Course without entering the race ? Why  ?

A Wayfarer is slow compared with the Cats. etc, but as a displacement mono hull it is not far different from , say, a Scorpion ( for the older hands who mremember ), and distinctly faster than Enterprises , GPs ,Solo's and Ok's to mention but a few and is  also vastly superior to all of them once you get into the ?chop? round Hilbre.
However, the time it takes , given the tide factors, to get there and back is very limiting and with the Round Hilbre race being preceded by a ?round the cans ? race  it is arguable that there is insufficient time available for the slower craft.
My experience of the first two ? Round Hilbre? would appear to bear this out -  On both occasions a number of  Wayfarers set off  on the Round Hilbre course at the same time as the first monohull race commenced ( round the cans ). On both occasions the fast Cats were past us by Middle Eye and the leading Canoe as we rounded Hilbre  and  re entered the estuary ? these boats having been started as the second race !
In order to give more boats a chance to enter the Round Hilbre racing and get home without running ot of water, I suggest that the Monohulls should not have a  ?round the cans? race before setting off. -  I realise there is a depth of water problem but potential participants are being put off by current arrangements.
