Boat Security
Unfortunately some people regard sailing clubs as a source of free boat parts. Fortunately we are very likely to be aware when boats like our own are sold, simply because many of these boats are now offered via the popular web sites. Hence we can predict when we might be targetted by a thief to complete a boat either for their use or for resale. Given that boat parts have little or no other use, we can be alert to potential losses.
Some general advice on how to secure your boats and fittings:
Firstly we have secure barriers, so no-one is likely to lose a boat or a trailer! In any case, your insurance company probably insists on the use of hitch locks and wheel locks, so you should use them even if the trailers can't be taken through the barriers! Furthermore, the club has invested in security measures to aid in the detection and identification of criminals.
So how to secure your boat's fittings?
- Remove what you can.
- Lock up the rest.
- Mark all items with indelible marker, etching or Datatag, using your post code or sail number. Make this visible if you can. Etching is best for metal items. If the item is then likely to rust (rare!), cover the etching with clear nail varnish.
- Photograph all the removable items and any identifiable marks, logos, serial numbers, etc. This will make it easy to identify any and all parts that get used on recipient boats - and there's not much other use for this gear.
- Put security stickers on your boat to alert people that your boat parts have been marked and can be identified. These stickers are available from the Bar for a nominal fee.
- Report all thefts to the local police and insist on getting a crime number if you believe a crime was committed (i.e. you did not lend or lose it!).
Given the specialist nature of our boats, it is likely that if things go missing they will turn up on a similar boat elsewhere, or for sale on eBay etc - all of which we can monitor easily, so keep an eye open for boats similar to our own that get sold in the area.
Tell us what you think - your comments, contributions and photos are very welcome.
