Club Championships Results
I have to apologise for getting distracted with packing my boat away today, in preparation for the trip to Grafham in a couple of weeks. As a result, I didn't collect the results. Sorry. Hopefully someone can send them to me soon.
I guess the forecast of high winds, 35mph according to accuweather, put a few people off. What can I say? You missed a treat. The wind was from the South, so a) it was warm and b) the water stayed flat. Ish. Perfect recipe for some real blasting. The championships called for a Long Distance race, a reaching race to favour the non-spinni boats and a windward-leeward race to favour the properly equipped boats.
The long distance race was: 3 laps of 3, 4, A, 7. Despite the size of the course, we were lapping in under 20 minutes - resulting in a 55 minute finish. It felt long enough! I think we'll have that one, as Will & Amy had suffered the misfortune of being over the line - they went back quickly but I think they didn't make up enough ground to close the gap sufficiently.... I need to see those results!
The second race included two long reaching legs: 4 8 A B. We capsized when heading up to the reach after stowing the spinni at the first leeward mark. Will & Amy passed as we struggled to pull the boat up against the wind - once they checked we were Ok, they were gone and we could not catch them. One each then, so down to the last race for a decision.
I'm not sure I was thrilled with the 'windward leeward' choice, with reaching legs at the top and bottom of the course 3 2 8 7, but upon reflection there are no straightforward windward leeward courses to choose from. Oh well, it is a Club Championship after all! Will & Amy beat us to the line shutting the door on me at the ODM. We followed him over and stayed in close contact, trading places for most of the first two laps. We finally overtook them convincingly (perhaps a bit mean passing so close to windward on the last beat of the lap, but fun!) and pulled out a lead during the last lap - it was never going to be enough to beat the handicap though, but great fun to be racing so closely. So that must be Will's win as well, hence giving him the Championship. Well done!
We weren't the only ones out there - Mike Johnson (Dart 18), Steve Roberts (Dart 15), Colin and Mike (Inter 18) and Graham and Nigel (Hurricane 4.9) all gave chase - and had to be overtaken at times!
If anyone else stayed at home, sure that it would be too windy to race - come on down, the water's great!
