Wayfarer and Dinghy News

Hi Everyone,

It's great to be able to say that the Wayfarer and Dinghy Cruising Saturday programme has started with a flourish, 10 people having attended a very interesting talk on the Dee Estuary, followed the next week by frantic activity in rigging boats and finding out what the various pieces of string are supposed to do on those boats acquired over winter.

Wayfarers receive a helping hand from the Captain

Sat 31st March brought a cloudless sky and a light breeze which made for a perfect first sail of the season for 3 fully crewed Wayfarers, of which one sailed ?3 ?up? - If one more helm had got out of bed at the crack of dawn we would have started the season with 4 boats on the water !

In order to encourage you all to also have a go at the Sunday racing, the programme continues next Saturday April 14 th at 2.15 p.m. when, owing to an uncooperative tide, we shall have a further shore talk on those matters you need to know in getting to and across a race start line in one piece and how to find your way round the cans. Think of it as a cruise round a predetermined course which will make you do a few additional manoeuvres and add to your experience. It would be great to see a few Wayfarers join the monohull racing fleet occasionally, even if we have a race of our own at the back !

Sat 21 April sees our first cruise which will be a gentle sail down to West Kirby. For this and future Saturday events we shall have tractor facilities available for getting up and down the beach. We also hope to have had 4 members trained to operate a rescue service, whom with a crew will help form a Saturday rescue boat rota. Also we shall be joined by the Fast Cats who are also going to undertake Saturday training and join some cruises. We could do with one or two more experienced helms to help with the training side.

The outline Saturday programme for the season is set out below. This is of course subject to change dependant upon both the weather, ? what people want ? and who turns up. The most important aspect is for people to enjoy the activity they undertake. The full sailing programme can be found on the Club website. Informal and / or adhoc Saturday / Sunday cruises can also be arranged for those who do not wish to race but do wish to sail ? in company?. ( No formal cruising activity has been put in the programme on Saturday regatta days ? mainly during June - or Club Open Day )

The times stated in the programme are ? off the beach times? to give maximum sailing time ? you should allow yourself an hour or so prior to this time to get rigged and ready.

A couple of other important advance dates for your diary are 19 May ? Club Open Day, when we wish to have one Wayfarer on display complete with camping tent and at least 2 more on the water for people to try the delights of Wayfarer sailing. Apart from boats and helms we also need an army of shore based helpers ? This is a great opportunity to ? muck in ? with everyone else at the club and have a good fun day whilst helping to attract new members. The next day ( 20thMay) , a cruise around Hilbre Island is planned which will take place simultaneously with the Fast Cats race around the island, thus providing rescue cover for us cruisers.

Also, to whet your appetite, is the Commodore's Cruise to the Hoyle Bank on the 24 June when we depart the club on a falling tide and fetch up after some cruising around, either seal watching or a ?Blast? at sea, on the Hoyle Bank for a barbecue and a few pints until the tide turns and we can get back home.

I look forward to seeing you all on the water whether sailing Wayfarers, other monohulls (how about cruising the ICs and Phantoms! ), cats or those wishing to crew over the forthcoming weeks.

If there is a particular activity you wish to be put into the programme please let me know and we will see what can be arranged.
