WAYFARERS HAPPENINGS AT DEE S.C.
Copy of article from
the May 2207 edition of the UK Wayfarer Association magazine article promoting Dee S C's Wayfarer Fleet:
For those readers new to our maxazine Dee S .C. is a sailing club based on the Dee Estuary and Wirral penisula located in the Wirrall Country Park at Thursaston which lies between Heswall and West Kirby. Whilst the club is perhaps best known for its Catamaran and Optimist fleets ( we have junior members in both the Regional and National squads ) , some 3 years ago theclub decided to introduce the Wayfarer to the monohull fleet as both a racing and cruising boat which is ideally suited to the estuary waters. It was also recognised that there are very few sailing clubs in the North West having a Wayfarer Fleet despite the Wayfarer handbook showing in excess of 50 Wayfarers being within a 40 mile radius of the club.
The fledgling fleet soon developed to some 7 boats, although the 2006 season could not be described as a vintage season in terms of the number of boats on the water, but did see a strong move towards an interest in dinghy cruising particularly yowards the latter part of the season with a number of enquiries at the club about both Wayfares in general and estuary cruising in particular.
As a result we are starting this season with 12 Wayfarers in the fleet and a further 2 or 3 new members looking to purchase used Wayfares which are in good condition . Whilst the club is primarily offers racing on a Sunday for Monohulls , Cats and Cruising Keel Boats it has recognised the growing interest in dinghy cruising with the Wayfarer being th boat of choice, As such a full Saturday programme of adult training and day cruising has been added to the Club's sailing programme which includes for rescue boat cover and tractor assistance for launch and recovery of the boats. On those Saturday's where the tide prevents sailing a number of shore events / talks have been organised (e.g.sailing on the Dee - Gear to use when cruising ) ? some of which I have to say has been ? cribbed ? from the Wayfarer cruising conferences - The theme of the programme is to be progressive and based on no cruising experience whatsoever. Having set up the outline afte discussion with last season's Wayfarers' and susequent agreement of the club's sailing committee ,I was deligted to hear the Kell's talk at the London Dinghy Show of how they got into and progressed with dinghy cruising on a very different estuary, which very much reflects our own progressive theme for 2007.
Some readers will recall that over the past 3 years Dee have held an Annual Wayfarer Bash. Due to our cruising development plan we have decided to give it a miss in 2007 but intend to reintroduce it in 2008 when we hope to have sufficient experience to go a little further afield. Meantime, should anyone wish to join us on our Saturday ? single tide cruises ? the dates and times can be found on the club web site ? www.dee-sc.co.uk
Plans are also afoot for an overnight return cruise later in the season all the way up the Dee to Chesrer ( Once we have learnt to ?shoot the bridges ? ) . Once these plans are finalised they will be placed on the Association web site with an invitation to join this voyage of exploration.
Our ambition at Dee is to make the club the leading base for Wayfarers in NW England ( there are , in our opinion, too few clubs sponsoring the Wayfarer in the North West whilst at the same time there being a substantial number of Wayfarer owners)
Anyone wishing to join us will be made very welcome either by dropping in at the club or by contact through either the club web site ( wayfarers@dee-sc.co.uk) or the class captain ( dougreeson32@hotmail.com
