23 June

Optimist Northern Area Championships and Super Grand Prix

16 th June West Kirby Sailing Club.

24 optimists attended the Northern Area championships at WKSC on the 16 th June. Competitors attended from local clubs plus the midlands and Wales.

The club has the advantage of being able to run races on the tidal estuary or on the marine lake. The decision was made to run the races on the marine lake due the light winds, no more than 10 knots all day.

Racing for the regatta fleet was held close to the shore. The race team started with some training exercises and in the end were able to run 5 races for the fleet with keen competition. Newcomer to the Oppie circuit Max Spedding was the convincing winner of the regatta fleet followed by his older sister Sophie in second place.

The Main fleet was closely contested by best of friends Cam Douglas and Sam Robinson. In the first two races they swapped firsts and seconds and at lunch it was all square. In the third race a superb first beat by Martin Wrigley (fully hiked most of the way) of Leigh and Lowton placed him first at the top mark only to round the wrong way. First to come out of the confused mark rounding was Cam Douglas and he went on to win with Sam pulling back to second place. Tobey Morsley from Port Dinorwic was putting a good series together with three thirds in a row.

Fourth race saw a series defining moment was Sam was just over the line and had to return, in the end he fought back to 4 th . This left Cam to fight it out with Matt Foskett from Staunton Harold for the race win, Cam just got the first to take the event with a race to spare. Sam had also secured 2 nd overall at this point but went on to take the win in race 5 from Mike Moruzzi and Matt Foskett who took third overall.

The prizes were kindly donated by Crewsaver
