Wayfarer and Dinghy News
Hi Everyone,
What with the tides and strong winds not a lot seems to have happened since the last update, sailing wise. However, 4 boats set out for the Flint cruise the other week and although we got there, there was not time to land, since the tide was on the turn. Once again we had been too slow in setting off. The outward leg was a pleasant broad reach / run depending upon the course sailed and, as usual, was sheltered once the Welsh coast had been reached. The return leg, with plenty of water beneath us, could just be completed in a single fetch straight across the sandbank, although some boats decided to turn this leg into a beat ( no you can't get to the pub in Parkgate any longer ! ). With the wind filling against the tide this leg was somewhat wet and Sally's Cottage seemed to be moving towards West Kirby! Everyone arrived back safely having had a good sail, the trip having been a " first" for 3 of the crews. The Round Hilbre event scheduled for the next day was called off due to the heavy weather.
Two Wayfarers ventured entered the Coronation Cup Pursuit race in which Rob Barlow / Peter Beardmore (Comealong ) came a very creditable fourth. Dave and Charlie Ewing sailing Deetour found the weather a bit too much for them with full main and genoa and retired rather than go swimming in the Dee. Is this the start of racing Wayfarers?
This last month has been notable for the way in which everyone has joined in the broader club activities - Sorting the dinghy parks out in the wet and also providing rescue crews for the Ribs so that the racing folks can do their thing with full rescue cover. Thanks to everone who is helping out, and I for one firmly believe in the old adage " the more you put in, the more you get out"
As stated in my last news update the Flint trip was the last organised dinghy cruising event in this season's programme (16 events in all I'm told ). However as several of you have asked for more and there is a whooping tide on Sat 29th it is proposed to have a further informal cruise on this day leaving the beach at 12.00.
On those Sundays in September / October / November, with the exception of 30 Sept ( Club Championship day ) I propose to offer some experience training for those of you who haven't been able to make it on Sats (please let me know if you wish to participate and what experience you are looking for) or some mini cruises following the racing fleet around the buoys. Dates and times are to be found in the club programme on the web site or in the club handbook.
Next year's programme is currently being drafted and provisionally includes a cruising training open weekend which we hope will be supported and assisted by UKWA at the beginning of August. We are also considering varying the training and cruising days between both Saturdays and Sundays next year, as well as introducing some team racing into the programme. Also being considered , as people gain experience, is the possibility of at least one extended cruise leaving early morning on a rising tide and returning during the evening on the next tide.
Comments, suggestions and ideas please. - After all it is your club and we wish to see everyone out on the water enjoying themselves.
Next month - season roundup.- Has anyone got any Wayfarer pictures for putting on the web site ?
