Cruising for a Bruising

Not just the racing boys out yesterday [Ed: Sunday 16th]- there were two boats keeping the end up for the cruising section (or at least I hope there were only two as that was the number of boats that made it back to the beach at the end!). Brian Leyland and Geoff McDonough were braving the conditions in their Wayfarer "Sunny Dee / Dee Angel" and I was out in my trusty Gull Spirit, "Larus" - getting some heavy weather experience and a hefty dose of adrenaline. No photos though as I was too busy trying to stay upright and avoid getting broadsided by breaking waves!

According to the Hilbre wind monitoring station the average wind went up to 33.6 knots whilst we were out with gusts up to nearly 40 - not sure we got all of that where we were, but it felt like it was getting close.

The 48 hour wind speed plot clearly shows the "lull" whilst everyone was getting rigged and deciding to go out, followed by the immediate re-doubling of the wind! [Ed: the web link has 'timed out' - but believe me, it showed a marked drop in windspeed, for a short while as everyone rigged, followed by a much bigger spike touching 40 knots once they were on the water]

Next time I will follow my gut instincts and watch proceedings from the bar!
