Lake Series Results

The lake series finale had the air of private competition between Ian "Macca" McLean (Phantom) and Iain "Dougal" Blair (Laser 1) with Mat "?%&^"£" Pollock (Laser 1) the only other competitor ready to face the evening's gusty conditions.  This in stark contrast to previous occassions in a successful series which attracted 32 competitors with up to 13 competing in a single race.

Macca  was carrying a one point lead and hence Dougal needed to win both races to clinch the series.  As the competitors rigged it became clear that choosing a windward mark would not be straight forward since most of the wind was arriving in strong random gusts about 30 seconds apart.

Fading light dictated two one lap races. Race 1 : Macca and Dougal had a close battle up the first half of the beat.  In an attempt to get clear Macca tacked off and Dougal enjoyed a lift toward the mark.  But then Macca flew back in to take Dougal a little past the lay line and round ahead. ( See photo ).

Once ahead Macca pulled out a modest 30 second lead by the finish. Would this be enough on handicap ? Race 2: Another close battle ensued seeing both Macca and Dougal complete the course with only 3 seconds separating them. Hence a win to Dougal. So the entire series rested on Race 1, was 30 seconds enough ? A few rough calculations suggested so.  In the final analysis Macca won by 9 seconds on handicap. Congratulations Macca.
