24 March

Report for Dart 18 TT GP2 at Dee SC 22/23 March 2008

Dee Sailing Club held the second national travellers event for UKIDA over the Easter weekend.
20 boats braved the weather forcast and made the trip through snow and strong winds on the Friday.

Saturday was very windy and with the Hilbre Island weather station recording constant winds of 35+knots through out the day and a severe wind chill (confirmed by the rescue crew who set out to check the race course) then racing was abandoned for the day.

On Sunday the wind had eased a bit, 15-20 knots during the day and the race team from Starlight Coaching managed to get 4 races in despite the shifty northerly wind, which still delivered a biting wind chill.

Two visitors, David Lloyd/Karri Andrews and Marco Manganelli/ Racheal Foster both from Stokes Bay fought it out with Will Thompson and Zander Ozelton from the home club for the overall win swapping the podium in tight races. Going into the last race each had a race win, Lloyd and Thompson had a second each and Marco was counting a third so the event was wide open.

Local team of James and son Alex Douglas (at 12 the youngest competitor) shot out of the blocks to lead the final race with the leading trio in pursuit. Douglas team just failed to hang on to the lead as the win piped up on the last beat. Lloyd and Manganelli powered passed on the beat and were locked together down the final run. at the leeward mark Lloyd / Andrews just managed to squeeze in ahead and take the gun. Thompson and Ozleton had to settle for 4th the only time they were out of the first 3 in the event.

UKIDA runs a handicap prize at each event and this was won by local crew George Bradshaw and Pete Henshaw, followed by another visiting team Simon Dewsbury and Paul Munday from STokes Bay.
