Adult Training 2007

2007 sees the introduction of a programme aimed at adult novice sailors wanting to learn to sail, or lake sailors wanting to tackle the estuary and open sea, and even those who'd like to start with, or progress to, catamaran sailing. In short, it is aimed at anyone wanting a bit of advice and support on their way to sailing on the Dee, whether on one or two hulls and with cruising or racing in mind.

Two programmes will be offered in parallel:

We are not RYA affiliated, so let's be up front about that. Our approach is to have experienced sailors offering "Shore Talks" and practical hands-on guidance on the water. All water-borne activity will operate with the provision of Rib-based safety cover.

The programme runs on Saturdays spread throughout the season. There will be a mix of discussions and shore-based demonstrations, and cruising on the estuary. The dinghy sessions are realistically aimed at sailors who already have a boat, or people wanting to crew with an existing owner - although there may be opportunities for the novice helm as well, dependent on availability of boats. The catamaran sessions will cater for those wanting to learn to crew, or helm from scratch, as well as providing an environment for more experienced sailors to adapt to estuary sailing, or to learn how to race at the club.

Adults can also choose to learn dinghy sailing on the Lake at West Kirby, taking place each Saturday morning.

The programme is:

Date Time Activity
Sat 24 March 14:15 Shore Talk: Boat Rigging and Basic Equipment
Sat 31 March 9:15 Rigged & Ready Cruising & Training on the Dee
Sat 14 April 14:15 Shore Talk: Starting a Race
Sat 21 April 12:55 Rigged & Ready Cruising & Training on the Dee
Sat 28 April 14:15 Shore Talk: Racing for Beginners
Sat 5 May 12:00 Rigged & Ready Cruising & Training on the Dee
Sat 12 May 14:15 Shore Talk: Reefing and Equipment
Sat 26 May 14:15 Shore Talk: Spinnakers - POSTPONED
Sat 23 June 14:15 Shore Talk: Lowering Masts for Bridges
Sat 14 July 10:15 Rigged & Ready Cruising & Training on the Dee
Sat 28 July 9:15 Rigged & Ready Cruising & Training on the Dee
Sat 4 August 13:45 Rigged & Ready Cruising & Training on the Dee
Sat 11 August 9:15 Rigged & Ready Cruising & Training on the Dee: Racing for Non-Racers
Sat 1 September 12:30 Rigged & Ready Cruising & Training on the Dee: with Micro Cruisers

The schedule is subject to change, and is adaptable according to needs on the day. However, it clearly builds up over the year and ideally will be followed through the year.

You are very welcome to bring your own boat, or to find a place on an existing one. A few places will be available to catamaran sailors either with or without a boat of their own - but do get in touch beforehand, as places are limited!

To confirm your place, or discuss your requirements and the suitability of this programme for you, please contact:

See also: Information for Beginners for advice on gear, boats, and sailing at the club in general.

These events are free of charge. It is hoped that people attending these sessions will join the club and continue sailing under their own steam as their skills develop. In the event of a shortage of places, priority will be given to club members.

Tell us what you think - your comments, contributions and photos are very welcome.
