Junior & Youth Training

Dee SC recognises that the development of tomorrow's sailors is an important activity, even at club level. We offer a variety of entry points and a progression from the first Junior 'rides' through the fleets up to Handicap Catamaran racing.

Junior sailing is fully supervised and takes place in the safe environment of West Kirby Marine Lake with a dedicated rescue boat on hand. Tuition is provided by a team of keen parents who are experienced sailors with a good few years of junior supervision and development under their belts. The training takes place every Saturday morning and is provided at a nominal cost, to include instruction and the use of the boats.

The 'Oppy' is the usual entry point for the youngest sailors, allowing them to learn all the skills required to sail independently - and ultimately, competitively.

The next step would be the Mirror, allowing the juniors to learn the art of crewing and / or helming with a crew, as part of a team.

By the time the Juniors have outgrown the Mirror, they are ready for life in the fast lane. Dee SC has several fleets of high speed catamarans waiting for them: Dart 16s, Dart 18s, Handicap Cats and Fast Cats.

The Youth squad is well represented amongst the crew of these supposedly 'adult' boats, with various teenagers frequently appearing on winning boats in all these fleets during the regular Sunday club racing, as well as further afield. Dee Juniors crewed for both the Overall Winner and Line Honours at the Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race this year (2005).

The Youth Squad have three dedicated Dart 16s at their disposal for use on Saturdays for training (under supervision) and Sundays as part of the club racing. They are available for use at a ridiculously nominal cost that a teenager wouldn't miss from their pocket money, so if you are interested,... Join in! If you prove yourself on these cats, you'll soon find yourself at the sharp end of the 'adult' fleets if you choose to.
